At Sarah’s Café, they do it all: from
crave-worthy house specialties to boxed
lunches, corporate catering to social
events, custom wedding cakes to
hand-decorated cookies and so much more.
One might expect the café to be buzzing with
chaos, but as proprietor Jill Umbarger
explained, it is just the opposite.
“We’ve built relationships with a lot of
residents who come in two or three times a
week, and I want them to feel at home and
let them know we care about them,” Umbarger
said. “It can get a little crazy in here
sometimes, but we have really created a very
laid back atmosphere.”
Sarah’s Café’s diverse and reasonably priced
menu sets out to please people of all ages,
whether the occasion calls for dining in,
carryout, delivery or a special event.
The breakfast menu features
American-inspired platters, breakfast
burritos, sandwiches and scrambles as well
as inventive twists on the traditional, like
Salsa Cakes: potato pancakes crowned with
two sunny side eggs and salsa; or French
toast stuffed with sweetened cream and fresh
fruit. The quiche of the day and fluffy,
three-egg omelets with a variety of meat,
veggie and cheese fillings always are a hit
with Sarah’s customers. Kaldi’s coffee by
the cup and specialty drinks like Crème
Brûlée Latte or White Chocolate Mocha are
also served.
Next on the menu are appetizers and salads.
There is the homemade Spinach Artichoke Dip
served with tortilla chips, Veggie Pizza and
Crispy Asian Wontons with a sesame sauce.
The BBQ Chicken Salad with black beans,
corn, tomato, two cheeses and fried onion
rings piled high on a bed of lettuce is a
favorite. Additional salad choices include
club, Greek, taco and spinach.
Hearty sandwiches and specialty wraps are
served with Sarah’s “addictive” homemade
chips sliced thin, deep-fried and sprinkled
with a special seasoned salt. Frequently
requested soups include Lobster Bisque and
Mushroom Brie. Café specials are served
daily and include Pasta Primavera, Lemon
Chicken Pasta and Café Pasta with fresh
herbs, a favorite of Umbarger’s.
And then there are Sarah’s wedding and
custom cakes where every uniquely detailed,
luscious creation is done by hand.
“We’re not like the typical bakery,”
Umbarger said. “We use real butter and
cream: four layers of cake with three layers
of filling for all of our cakes. People just
rave about them.”
Umbarger just finished building a production
kitchen and showroom off Old State Road to
better showcase her custom creations and
also participates at local bridal shows.
Hand-decorated, custom cookies also are
offered and are popular for kids’ parties
and as wedding favors.
For Umbarger, the greatest satisfaction is
without a doubt making people happy through
well thought out, memorable food and
service.
